He Denied Me a Hug — But Made the Best Nudles Ever
Everyone has that one love story. This one was pure obsession/infatuation!?
It may not have lasted long. It may have been messy or mad or made no sense to anyone else. But for mw, it set the benchmark for what obsession could feel like when it’s raw, weird, and wonderful. Mine involved nudles, a chilled glass of Apple Tang, and a Catholic boy who could solve a Rubik’s Cube in under a minute.
We didn’t last long — but oh, what a time it was.
He would pick me up, place me on the kitchen counter like it was the most natural thing in the world, and start cooking. Nudles was his signature dish back then. Not the fancy kind — just noodles with herbs from Domino’s leftover packets, and sauces mixed like cocktails. Plates? Too mainstream. We’d eat straight out of the saucepan, laughter spilling, cracking the most bizarre jokes.
While the nudles cooked, he’d toss a glass into the deep freezer — an EMPTY one, mind you — because he believed Apple Tang should be served in a glass that’s just as cold as the drink itself. That obsession with detail? Charming as hell. I mean, he was over 6 feet tall, what's not to like!!!? He was a Catholic boy. I seem to have a thing for Catholic boys — not even going to pretend otherwise. Maybe it’s the quiet rebel in them. Maybe it’s just coincidence. Maybe not.
Snapchat filters. Rubik’s Cubes. Dumb giggles. Proud smirks. He was clueless and fun and impossibly confident in his own quirky way.
And then — just like that — it ended.
I remember writing him a love letter ouch! I find it so amusing now. I remember he denied me a hug on the last day, just for fuck sake, and i was so heartbroken! That hug felt like closure I never got, and maybe that’s why it stung so much. That moment was our quiet undoing. We didn’t talk for a long while after the breakup. But over time, with miles and countries between us, we managed to become friends again. Sometimes when you lose the love, you gain a strange kind of fondness — like a bookmark in your favorite chapter.
More about this story? Just that. XOXO
